Breast Cancer More Aggressive On Overweight Women

More likely to relapse after treatment, a poorer prognosis … breast cancers are more aggressive among overweight women, but until then we can explain it. But two French research teams are to elucidate this mystery.

In addition to these deleterious effects on cardiovascular health and the onset of diabetes, obesity may play a role in the prognosis of breast cancer, especially its ability to spread to other organs. This statistical relationship is to find a physiological explanation by two research teams bringing together researchers from INSERM, CNRS and Université Paul Sabatier.

An interaction between adipocytes and breast tumor
The outer part of the breast is mainly composed of fatty tissue, itself largely composed of adipocytes. These cells are capable, in addition to their storage / release of fat to secrete many proteins. The researchers investigated whether these proteins play a role in the development of breast cancer.

To do this, teams Philippe Valet at the Institute of metabolic and cardiovascular diseases (Inserm / Université Paul Sabatier) and Catherine Muller at the Institute of Pharmacology and Structural Biology (CNRS / Université Paul Sabatier) cells were grown together mammary tumor and adipocytes.

In the presence of tumor cells, adipocytes change and show a change in the secretion of some of their proteins, including inflammatory proteins such as interleukin 6. Gradually, these cells establish effective interaction with the tumor, which leads to an increase in its “colonization potential”, so its aggressiveness.

Broccoli Prevent Bladder Cancer

A joint study by researchers in the United States and New Zealand, confirmed the view, long held, that the consumption of cruciferous plants of the family implies a protective effect against cancer. In particular, the research, published in Cancer Research, focused on the action of isothiocyanates, including broccoli sprouts are a rich source on the bladder.

The freeze-dried extract of broccoli sprouts has been administered to laboratory mice, and was able to inhibit the induction of bladder cancer, treated with a carcinogen, a significant and dose-dependent. Inhibition of carcinogenesis was associated with significant induction of protective enzymes against oxidants and carcinogens. On the other hand, the extract itself caused no histological changes in the bladder.

Relevant data that the concentration of isothiocyanates in the urine of mice treated with the extract of broccoli sprouts had two or three times higher than that in the blood. In conclusion, the researchers stress that broccoli sprouts are remarkably promising substances for the prevention of bladder cancer and isothiocyanates, present in the extract are selectively transferred bladder epithelium through urinary excretion.

Optimal Cancer Therapy

For optimal cancer therapy, it would be important to know which genes in cancer cells have altered in the patients. In the largest cancer genome study of its kind now, American doctors have sequenced the genomes of tumors from 50 breast cancer patients and compared with the DNA sequences of healthy cells of the same patient.

Surprisingly, the researchers found only a few mutations that occurred with greater frequency. Instead, the varied nature of the mutations between the patients very much. Regardless, the pending analysis of DNA sequences provide important information for better, individual therapy, the scientists said at the annual meeting of the American Association for Cancer Research in Orlando. “Cancer genomes are extremely complicated. This explains the difficulty to predict the treatment outcome and to develop new treatments,” says Matthew Ellis of Washington University in St. Louis, one of the leaders of the project.

Overall, the researchers found more than 1700 mutations. However, most of which came to only one patient. In addition to two known mutations that are present in 40 or 20 percent of cases, researchers identified only three other, previously unknown mutations that were detectable at least ten percent of the tumors. And 21 more altered genes occurred in only two to three patients.

All tumors in the study were estrogen receptor-positive, meaning their growth was strongly stimulated by estrogen. Nevertheless, only in half of cases, effective cancer drug that blocked the estrogen effect. It is not known why the anti-hormonal therapy is effective in some estrogen receptor-positive cancers, and not for others. Detailed analysis of sequence data now available to help you find the cause.

The cancer genome research is an important step towards personalized medicine. It is routinely the tumor genome of the patients are sequenced in the not too distant future after a cancer diagnosis, so that a possible to this type of cancer tailored, optimal therapy.

Colon Cancer Is Curable

The River War specialist Mary Lang-Lengton said last Thursday at the Club the Province, in the symposium Prevention and treatment of colon cancer, that a liberal intake of red meat, processed meats and foods with a high presence of fats, While reduced consumption of fruits and vegetables, increases the likelihood of colon cancer.

The meeting was organized by the Spanish Association Against Cancer, on the occasion of the celebration last March 31 Day of the disease. Colorectal cancer deaths in Spain are second in the ranking of deaths from cancer in both men and women. The celebration in March this year the European month of Colon Cancer has again underlined the importance of the disease.

For months is visible on billboards and bus shelters, and other advertising media, the campaign of the Alliance for the Prevention of Colon Cancer engaging more than a dozen medical and scientific societies. “Colon cancer is curable in 90 percent of cases if detected early,” said the message signed with several notorious image of Spanish society.
Early detection is essential in this type of tumors, as in other cancers. But perhaps even more the primary prevention of colon cancer as summarized in a healthy lifestyle.

“Diet is key,” said Maria Guerra del Río Lang-Lenton, Deputy Medical Gastroenterology, University Hospital of Gran Canaria Doctor Negrin. “The lifestyle is crucial in the prevention of cancerous diseases of the digestive area and power, definitely,” said the specialist at Club La Province.
