Broccoli Prevent Bladder Cancer

A joint study by researchers in the United States and New Zealand, confirmed the view, long held, that the consumption of cruciferous plants of the family implies a protective effect against cancer. In particular, the research, published in Cancer Research, focused on the action of isothiocyanates, including broccoli sprouts are a rich source on the bladder.

The freeze-dried extract of broccoli sprouts has been administered to laboratory mice, and was able to inhibit the induction of bladder cancer, treated with a carcinogen, a significant and dose-dependent. Inhibition of carcinogenesis was associated with significant induction of protective enzymes against oxidants and carcinogens. On the other hand, the extract itself caused no histological changes in the bladder.

Relevant data that the concentration of isothiocyanates in the urine of mice treated with the extract of broccoli sprouts had two or three times higher than that in the blood. In conclusion, the researchers stress that broccoli sprouts are remarkably promising substances for the prevention of bladder cancer and isothiocyanates, present in the extract are selectively transferred bladder epithelium through urinary excretion.
